WoodwardRelaysFan.com is devoted to the history of the high school relay meets in Maryland known as the Woodward Relays.
The Judge Charles W. Woodward Relays spring track meet is known for its signature event, the steeplechase, and its all-relay format including field event relays. The fall Woodward Relays cross country meet is known for its 6x1 mile relay format.
The first outdoor track Woodward Relays meet was hosted at Judge Charles W. Woodward High School in Bethesda, Maryland in 1973. The cross-country version of the Woodward Relays was added in the fall of 1973. Woodward High School closed in 1987, and the meets continued to be hosted at Walter Johnson High School, Richard Montgomery High School, Montgomery College, Rockville, and Georgetown Prep School. From 2007 until present, the Woodward Relays meets have been hosted at Georgetown Preparatory School. The original meet director, Greg Dunston, remains enthusiastically at the helm of each Woodward Relays meet with the help of volunteers and the Georgetown Prep School staff.

The Woodward Relays was named for the high school at which it was first hosted. After Woodward High School closed its doors in 1987, Coach Dunston kept the name of the meet alive due to the meet's name recognition and reputation. The meet name also honors the memory of the old high school and its alumni.
The steeplechase has been the signature event at the sping meet since the second running of the Woodward Relays. In 1974, the Woodward Relays boasted the first offering of a steeplechase race at the high school level in the United States.
Dunston has credited Wabash College in Indiana for inspiring the 6x1 mile cross country relay format. He credited the Western Pennsylvania Relays in Pittsburgh for inspiring the spring track meet format.
